Brand Voice: How to Write Product Descriptions That Sound Like You

If your product page could belong to any store, it will not stand out in any of them.

Brand Voice: How to Write Product Descriptions That Sound Like You

Open ten dropshipping stores selling the same kind of product and you will often see the same sentences. "Premium quality material. Perfect gift for any occasion. Fast shipping worldwide." The text came from the supplier, and so did everyone else's. When every page says the same thing, the only difference left is the price.

A brand voice is how you break that pattern. It is not a slogan. It is the way you write when you talk to your customer, applied the same way everywhere.

Define your voice in three lines

Skip the long brand books. Write down:

  1. Who you are talking to, as a real person. "A first-time pet owner who is slightly anxious about doing it right" is better than "pet lovers".
  2. Three words that describe how you sound. For example: practical, warm, a little dry.
  3. Two things you never do. For example: no hype words, no exclamation marks.

Keep this on one page and look at it before writing.

Write for one customer, not everyone

Describe the product to the person you identified. What do they worry about? What are they trying to get done? A description for a stainless steel water bottle might lead with the fact that it does not leak in a bag, because that is what the buyer fears, rather than with "premium 304 steel".

Use the supplier's specs for the facts, but put them in your own order and in your own words.

A structure that works

For most products, this layout is enough:

  • A short opening line about the result or feeling, not the features.
  • Three to five bullets with the details people check: size, material, what is in the box, care.
  • A short paragraph for the questions people have, such as fit or compatibility.
  • A line about shipping and returns, so nobody has to leave the page to find out.

Be specific

Specific words sound more human than general ones, and they convince more. Compare:

Made with high-quality materials for lasting use.

The strap is 3 cm wide, so it stays flat on your shoulder instead of digging in.

If you ordered a sample, you can describe what you actually saw and felt. This is one more reason to order samples first: your notes become your copy.

Avoid the usual empty words

Cut or replace phrases like "high quality", "perfect for everyone", "game changer" and "must-have". If a sentence would work on any product, it says nothing about yours.

A voice does not mean ignoring keywords. Put the main term for the product in the title and once or twice naturally in the description, and write unique text for each page. Google tends to ignore pages that repeat what hundreds of others say, and unique descriptions are among the simplest wins in e-commerce SEO.

Check it before you publish

Read the description out loud. Does it sound like a person? Would your target customer say "that is me"? Then compare it with your voice page. If it fits, move to the next product and do the same.

The voice should carry into your emails, your support replies and your social posts too. A consistent voice, along with a good logo and visual style, is what makes a store feel like a brand.
